Embossing Velvet

This technique is very popular, although the proper term would probably be "debossing", as the resulting design is concave rather than convex. Using this technique you can create your own unique velvet fabric.

The supplies needed are a steam iron, fabric stamps, water bottle and rayon or silk velvet. Velvets made from acetate or nylon won't hold the embossed shape for more than a day or two.

Place the fabric right side down onto the stamp and spray with water. With iron on the highest steam setting, place firmly on stamp and press straight down, don't move iron side to side. Hold down with firm pressure for 10 to 15 seconds. Remove.

A very simple technique. Velvet that has been embossed will need to be dry cleaned, as hand washing removes some of this effect. Click here to see artwork incorporating this technique.
